Co-Creative Project funded by Brigstow Institute
For the past couple of years I’ve been working with a fantastic team of people exploring how to return rocks to Aotearoa. The rocks were exported to the UK ten years ago for research into the Mount Tarawera eruption of 1866. Before they were exported, geologist Geoff Kilgour spoke with the local iwi (tribe) and they made an agreement that the rocks could be removed on the condition that one day they’d be returned. This project explores issues of repatriation, rematriation, reparation, colonial history, ethics, rights of nature, acquisition, best practice when working with rocks and stones. The team includes a curator, geologists, artist, researcher, lecturer in art history, lecturer in anthropology.
